R U OK? Am I OK?

Today is a great day to remind us each year that we need to genuinely connect with and care for one another.

We need to do this every day, not just on this day. But this day is a great reminder that we consider the wellbeing of others, every single day.

We’re all in this in together. Life is challenging.
Especially the past few years and the best way we can navigate this is with the support of one another.

So someone asks you R U OK, then what? How do we know if we’re OK?

What does OK actually even mean?

Personally, I consider OK to be a reflection of how my core human needs are being met, and what I am doing to meet them:

  • The need for safety: both physical and psychological.

  • The need for connection: experience of love and belonging. Feeling connected to people and groups that matter to us.  

  • The need to feel valued: to recognise our inherent value — that we are capable of making worthwhile contributions and that we matter.

  • The need for fulfilment: to have meaning and purpose, to develop ourselves, to have opportunities to learn and grow, to develop and benefit from meaningful activities and from fun and satisfaction.


When our core human needs are being met by ourselves, our lives and our relationships, our wellbeing is high.

The other human need I feel is critical is to have a high level of energy. I love feeling energised, it really helps me thrive, and attend to all of the above needs thoughtfully and practically.

So, to build my energy I focus on my physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, making sure each day I do something small to enhance my energy at each of these levels.

I also aim to ensure that my life and relationships support me at each of these levels too!
